Duncan was a 5th generation Texan, born to Hortense Tellepsen Butler and Joe Kelly Butler. He graduated from The Kinkaid School in 1959 and entered the University of Texas, where he received his undergraduate degree in accounting and his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated with honors in 1964.
After graduation, he joined Butler Drilling Company, where he spent his career. Duncan helped expand and prosper the family business over the next 25 years. He later spent considerable time managing the family ranching business in Burnet, Texas. Duncan was deeply committed to his family and his community. He was a member of various boards and organizations, including Post Oak Little League and Post Oak Bank. He was a member of Allegro and the Houston Country Club and a former HCC Invitational Golf Tournament champ. Duncan was an avid Longhorn fan and supporter of the University of Texas and its athletic programs.
Duncan married Maria Lucas Burke in 1961. Four children were born of this union and were raised in Houston.
He is survived by his son Duncan Tellef Butler, Jr. and his wife Amy Addington Butler, Ria Butler Henderson and her husband Jay Hodges Henderson, Burke Walker Butler and his wife Melissa Schwab Butler, and JoAnna Butler Hurley and her husband Seldon Patrick Hurley. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren: Amy Alexandra Butler, Anna Kathryn Butler, Duncan Tellef Butler, III, Sarah Burke Butler, Andrew Addington Butler, Hayden Maria Henderson, Anna Clarke Henderson, Lucas Walker Henderson, GeorgeAnna Maria Hurley, JoAnna Parker Hurley, Joseph Walker Butler and Margaret Kathryn Butler.
A celebration of Duncan’s life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 13th of July, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Pastor West Brazelton of Grace Bible Church in the Heights, is to officiate.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are Robert Hatchett, James Street, Bill Matthews, Lewis Brazelton, and David Hatchett.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for a reception to be held in the adjacent Grand Foyer.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that contributions in Duncan’s name be directed to The Brenham State School, Community Relations, 4001 Hwy 36 S, Brenham, Texas, 77833-9611, or to the charity of one’s choice.
