Doug was born on the 22nd of October 1951, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the son of Doris and Henry Bogart. A native Houstonian, he attended Bunker Hill Elementary, Spring Branch Junior High and Memorial High School.
In 1970, Doug headed to the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration with Honors majoring in Accounting. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and Silver Spurs. While at UT, Doug met his wife, Barby Glaze, and they were married for 48 years.
Upon graduation in 1974, Doug joined the accounting firm of then, Ernst & Ernst, as a staff accountant. He spent his entire career with Ernst & Young, retiring as partner in 2010. While working at EY, Doug served various clients and was the UT Campus Coordinator Partner for recruiting accounting students. He was awarded the 2010 Texas Star award at UT’s Masters in Professional Accounting graduation as recognition of his tremendous support of the UT Accounting Department.
For over 20 years, Doug served as the Director of the Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Program for the Houston region. He and Barby enjoyed hosting the Houston area winners at the National Program in Palm Springs with a little work, a lot of golf and many friendships over the years.
Doug was a lifelong member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. He was also active in the Houston community as a board member of the Alley Theater, the Children’s Fund, the Touchdown Club of Houston and Lakeside Country Club. Doug was very proud to have served as treasurer on the Board of Directors of Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM).
Doug was an avid sports fan. He grew up rooting for the Colt 45’s continuing on as a loyal Astros fan. He attended many Astros games with his boys including the 2017 World Series and the victory parade, as well. Doug loved his Texas Longhorns. He enjoyed tailgating and watching the Horns (most of the time) play in Memorial Stadium. Of course, the highlight was cheering the Horns to victory at the 2005 National Championship Game against USC in the Rose Bowl; an experience he would relive often.
Doug enjoyed his Saturday morning round of golf with his “PODS” at Lakeside. His claim to fame was winning a Lexus for a hole in one on #14 at the Lakeside Cup Member Guest. A feat he was happy for people to talk about as often as possible.
Doug faced his long battle with Parkinson’s disease with determination and courage. He did not let his illness keep him from living his life. Whether on vacation, the golf course, at Memorial Stadium, or Minute Maid Park, he was ready to go full steam ahead until his limited mobility prevented him from doing so.
Doug’s greatest love was his family. Having three boys, he attended countless baseball, basketball and football games through the years and enjoyed playing golf with his built-in foursome. He was blessed to have watched his grandson play baseball, as well.
Doug is survived by his wife, Barby; their three sons, Mark and his wife Becky, Rob and his wife Micah, and Brian and his wife Kristin. “Bogey,” as he’s called, adored his grandson, Jake, who brought much joy to him every day. Doug is also survived by his sisters, Patty Murrill and her husband Joe, Khaki Murrill and her husband Jim, Kim Wetmore and her husband Clint, and sister-in-law, Gayle Lewis and her husband, Rick. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Doug’s loving and compassionate caregivers with Texas Home Care Partners and Autumn Years Assisted Living and Hospice Care for their loving care throughout this journey.
A celebration of Doug’s life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 19th of September, in the sanctuary of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street in Houston, where Rev. Dr. Wick Stuckey is to officiate.
Immediately following all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the nearby Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in his name may be directed to Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM), 1625 Blalock Road, Houston, TX 77080.
