Doris Marie White, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home on April 3, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 27, 1930, the daughter of Henry and Hazel (Knowles) Walls, and sister to Vernon Walls, LeRoy Walls, and Clifford Walls.
Doris graduated from Scotland High School in Scotland, Indiana in 1948. During high school, she begin working at the Crane Grocery Store where she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Paul White. He was born in Greene County, Indiana on June 18, 1929. He was the son of Paul William White and Marguerite A. (Beck) White, and sibling to Geraldine Ruth (Tye) Thomas, Earl (Joann) White. Stephen (Rosie) White, and Ellen “Ciss” (Robert) Jerrels. Bill graduated from Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, Indiana in 1947.
After graduation, Bill joined the U.S. Air Force while Doris continued to work at the Crane Grocery Store which was owned by Bill’s family. Doris and Bill were married in Bloomfield, Indiana on January 20, 1952. After his service in the Air Force, Bill returned to Indiana to work in his family grocery stores. Later, Bill and Doris owned and ran several businesses in Indiana, including grocery stores, laundry mats, an appliance store, and a liquor store. During this time, they had three children, Ricky L. White, Danny R. White, and Lisa K. White. They were members of the Bloomfield Christian Church and later the Crane Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Newberry (Past Matron) and a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of the Freemasons, the Shiners, and the American Legion.
In the late 1970s, they moved to Houston, Texas, where he became the manager of the Ben Milam Hotel and the Old Y&W Cafeteria, which he continued to do until his retirement in 1995. Doris continued to work in the grocery industry. In 1997, she joined the team at Kroger where she continued to work until she retired at the age of 80, being Kroger’s oldest employee in Houston at the time.
Doris and Bill enjoyed a wonderful life together and happy marriage until his passing on October 12, 2009, at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, both his sons, Ricky L. White and Danny R. White, and his daughter-in-law, Bonnie. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents, all three of her brothers, her two sons, and daughter-in-law.
Doris and Bill were survived by their daughter, Lisa K. (Don) White, their grandchildren, Anthony (Sujin) White, Sarah (Brandon) Berry, Michael (Heather) White, Kenneth Spencer, Samuel Barnes, and Monica Barnes, along with two great-grandchildren Brandon O’Donnell and Haley O’Donnell and one great-great-grandchild, Leo.
Graveside services will be held at Brookside Cemetery in Houston, Texas on May 16, 2025, when Bill, Doris, and Doris’ brother, LeRoy Walls, will all be laid to rest at the same time in accordance with Doris’ wishes that “they were not going without her”. They will be sadly missed by those who loved them and the many whose lives they have touched through the years with their kindness, generosity, laughter, and love. Our lives were better because they were a part of it.
