Dolores (Mom to us her sons) was a caring, sweet, kind, engaging, empathetic, cheerful, joyful, giving, prayerful, strong, delightful, loving, beautiful and very special mother, sister, daughter, spouse, advocate, caretaker and homemaker. Mom was full of love, adoring deeply her vocation as a mother and adoring deeply her four sons. We and everyone who met her adored her just as deeply! Mom was the best Mom anyone could ever have! We will miss her graceful presence, smile, beauty, joy, spirit and dedication to and comfort for all, including her beloved canine companions over the years.
Mom was the consummate, faith-filled handmaid of the Lord, believing nothing is impossible for God. Mom also believed in and provided the foundation for our education as the way to move forward and higher. Mom was proud and blessed that all her sons graduated from college!
Mom was born on August 11, 1939 in Kingsville, Texas, graduating from Kingsville High School in 1959 and attending Texas A&I University thereafter. After living in Kingsville 31 years, she resided in Victoria, Texas for decades, in Batesville, Arkansas for a brief period, and finally in the Houston, Texas area.
Mom is survived by her dear sons Jesus (Jess) Alonso Martinez of Houston, Jose (Joey) Tomas Martinez of Alexander, Arkansas, and Jaime (Jimmy) Martinez of Houston with beloved family member, Dwayne Whiddon. Mom was preceded in death by her loving husband Jose (Joe) Angel Martinez, her loving son Juan (Johnny) Alberto Martinez, her mother Dolores “Moma Lola” Gonzalez Cortez, her sister Eugenia “Kena” Silguero and her husband Pedro Silguero (both of whom were parents who raised Mom), her sisters Rosa Alvarez and Amparo Caducoy, and her brothers Guillermo, Fernando and Edwardo Cortez. Mom was the last surviving member of her Cortez family unit.
Our family is truly grateful for your love and compassion extended to us during Mom’s transition to the Lord. We especially thank Blue Star Hospice for their benevolent care. We are comforted by your visits, phone calls, flowers, prayers and Christ-like deeds. Your condolences are dearly cherished. We in return extend to you Mom’s gentle, loving sending forth prayer, “God Bless You, Mijito(a),” which Mom always said without fail as her goodbye!
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mom will be held Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 10:30 AM at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Drive, Houston, TX 77024. All are welcome!
