Edgar Covey Nash, Jr was born on the 8th of November 1940 in Bryan, Texas, to Edgar Covey Nash, Sr. and Pauline “Polly” Buchanan Nash. He passed away, age 76, with the love of his life, Michelle, by his side at their home in Houston, on Thursday, the 24th of August 2017.
Covey’s childhood was mostly spent in Houston but he also spent several early childhood years in Galveston which began a lifelong affinity for the island. Covey attended Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston where he was a cheerleader, a member of several school clubs and a class of 1958 graduate. He was a dedicated member of the Austin High School Alumni organization for more than 20 years, serving in leadership roles on several committees for reunions, school redevelopment and student scholarship fundraising.
Upon graduation, Covey was admitted to the University of Texas at Austin and earned his BA in 1964. At UT, he was a member of the cheerleading squad, Silver Spurs Honorary Service Organization as well as Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Covey served on several UT alumni reunion committees and during the last 5 years proudly helped to organize the successful return of Beta to the UT campus.
Covey was an advertising executive in Houston for many years, starting his career with McCann-Erickson and ending as a Vice President/Account Supervisor at Weekley & Penny. In 1971-72 he served as President of the American Advertising Federation- Houston. At the time he was the youngest person ever to be elected President of the organization. Covey remained an active member of the President’s Council and was recognized as an AAF-H Honorary Life Member. In the late 1980s Covey became a real estate professional and eventually retired as broker/owner of Covey Nash Realty.
Many lifelong bonds were made at Austin High, the University of Texas and in his professional life. The most important bond he made was with a fellow student at UT, Michelle Guillot, who on the 27th of June 1964 became the woman he forever called, “my bride”. Covey and Michelle were happily married 53 years, raised five children together and were blessed with seven grandchildren.
He was a man noted for his dry wit, an amazing memory for names, places and dates and an innate ability to personally connect with anyone. He leaves behind many who called him friend.
Covey was preceded in death by his parents; by his brother Joe Bodie Nash; and sister-in-law Cathi. He is survived by his wife Michelle; their five children and seven grandchildren, Nicole (Tommy) Cagle and daughter Sara, Rob Nash, Michael (Cynthia) Nash and sons Cullen Nash and John Paul Sargent, Reagan (Suzanne) Nash and daughters Isabela and Louisa and Bodie (Michele) Nash and son Gannon and daughter Lily.
A memorial service is to be conducted at half-past ten o’clock in the morning on Friday the 22nd of September, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church; 11740 Joan of Arc Drive in Houston.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent fellowship hall.
