MaMa was born to a police officer father and a homemaker mother in Dongguan, Guangdong China on November 3, 1924. The oldest of 9 siblings, MaMa was a spirited individual full of strength and courage. Surviving both the Great Depression and World War II, MaMa has often been described as a fighter.
MaMa married Chiu Lau, “YeYe”, in 1945 and together they had five children. MaMa spent much of her time raising her children and has always been known for her talents in cooking delicious meals, visiting the markets of Hong Kong daily to ensure the freshest ingredients. MaMa also demonstrated a talent for gardening, growing beautiful flowers, and she shared her wonderful sense of humor through her infectious laughter. She was also a talented singer and loved Chinese opera. MaMa was a loving and caring mother, teaching her children traditional values of Chinese culture while also encouraging them to pursue their dreams. Educational and professional opportunities eventually resulted in most of her children immigrating to the United States. In 1983, MaMa and YeYe followed suit, moving to Houston, Texas to help care for their eldest grandchildren.
MaMa loved her family dearly and the addition of grandchildren gave her such joy and excitement. She and YeYe often traveled to visit their children and grandchildren in Texas, Michigan, and Massachusetts. In her later years, MaMa found joy in being surrounded by her family, which included her eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. And while she loved her family, MaMa discovered a greater love, Jesus Christ. MaMa came to trust in her Lord and Savior and was baptized in 1990, dedicating her life to following Him.
MaMa is survived by her husband Chiu Lau; their children Ching Wa Lau (劉清華), Francis Lau (劉清國), Serrine Lau (劉倩儀), Cindy Lau (劉婉儀), and Ching Lau (劉清清).
A funeral service in her honor will be held at West Houston Chinese Church at 10:00 a. m. on Saturday, July 18, 2015. Pastor Brian Lam will officiate the ceremony. MaMa will be laid to rest at Forest Park Cemetery. The Lau family would like to send their thanks and appreciation for the prayers and support received from family and friends.
