Charles Edward "Charley" Layton, 91, died a peaceful death on January 21, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri. Charley was born on October 17, 1920 in Independence, Missouri to Edward Charles and Nellie O'Hara Layton.
He served his country during World Ward II in the Merchant Marines and enjoyed telling the many stories of his adventures. He moved to Houston, Texas in 1943, went to work for Armco Steel, and retired after 37 years. He loved working in the steel industry and made lifelong friends while at Armco. Charley raise his three sons in Houston with his wife Penny. They retired to Lake Livingston for many years and then traveled the country in a motor home prior to her death in 1993. Charley married Shirley Miller in 2004 and returned to his home state of Missouri.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Layton; his son Edward Charles Layton; grandchildren, Glenn Womack, Greg Womack, Terri Patton, Charles Layton, Eva Layton, Wendi McDonald, Monica Clayton, Jessica Gasparo, Ronda Layton, and Russell Layton; twenty-one Great-Grandchildren; two Great-Great Grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his loving step-family in Kansas City. Charley is predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Penny Layton; sons, Ronald Lee Layton and James Phillip Layton, and nine brothers and sisters. Charley Layton was a loving husband, a patient, supportive and devoted father and friend to his sons, and the most wonderful PawPaw ever. We will alway remeber how much he loved us, how kind he was to everyone, and how much he made us laugh.
Visitation is Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 5pm to 9pm, with a Rosary at 7pm, at Advantage Howard-Glendale Chapel, 1015 Federal Road, Houston, Texas 77015.
A funeral mass will be held at 10am on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 1702 Ninth Street, Galena Park, Texas.
