Carolyn was born in Seminary, Mississippi, February 16, 1934, to the late Plezz and Edna Herrin. She grew up in Sumrall, Mississippi, and graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi. After college, a job opportunity brought her to Houston, where she met her husband, Dr. Barden E. “Bud” Patterson. Together, they built a life they loved, with faith, family, and service at the center of it. She was the matriarch of her family and a loyal friend to many, including her friends in the Journey Bible study class at Second Baptist Church West Campus, where she was a faithful member.
Her life is best exemplified by her favorite Bible passage, Philippians 4:4-7, which reads, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Jan Patterson Cameron, her son Barden Todd Patterson and wife Amy, her grandchildren: Kyrie Cameron and husband Paul, Darian Schmeltekopf and husband Eric, Emily Conner and husband Billy, four great-grandchildren: Noah, Theo, Truett, and Hannah Kate, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Welcoming her into Heaven was her beloved husband, Bud, as well as her siblings, Rosemary, Jean, and Don.
A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, January 19, 2024, at Second Baptist Church West Campus, 19449 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77094. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boys and Girls Country of Houston, 18806 Roberts Road, Hockley, Texas 77447 in her memory.
