Carl Gene Reed

Carl G. Reed of Cypress, Texas passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on August 4th, 2023 after a 19-year battle with cancer. He was born June 4, 1944 in Middleport, Pennsylvania to Mabel and Irvin Reed but raised by his aunt Elva and her husband George Smith. Carl was the youngest of eight children.

He attended Penn State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Labor-Management Relations before enlisting in the Army in 1966 and serving at Fort Beavers, South Korea as the Signal Officer for the 73rd Armor Battalion. Following his years of service, he had a long and successful career in Human Resources.

Carl enjoyed many hobbies, but particularly golfing, fishing, travel, photography and gardening. Always gregarious, he never met a stranger and was an avid storyteller. But, by far, his favorite pastime was spending time with his three grandsons and two great grandchildren.

It is our hope that whenever you enjoy a bit of butter pecan ice cream, strawberry rhubarb pie, a sip of Knob Creek, a game of Sudoku or a Nittany Lion sporting event (We Are!) that you fondly remember our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Ann; their son, Eric and his wife Cristine Reed; their daughter, Nicole Eckard; and their grandsons Joshua (Shelby) Reed, Jacob Reed and Jack Eckard. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Luciana and Leopold Reed; one brother, Allan Reed; two sisters, Marilyn Mengle and Elva Nardozzi; and many nieces and nephews. Carl is predeceased by his parents, Irvin and Mabel; his sister, Leafie Stevens; and his brothers, Irvin, Donald, Lamar and Russell Reed.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 1st, 11:45 am at American Heritage Funeral Home (10710 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038), followed by a committal ceremony and gun salute at Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, the Patient Access Network Foundation, or the American Cancer Society.
