Calvin Morgan McMinn

Calvin was born May 27, 1943 to Clyde and Bernice (Dufrene) McMinn. He grew up in Metairie, Louisiana outside of New Orleans. He was a 1961 graduate of East Jefferson High School where he played varsity football and was also recognized as “Most Spirited” of his Senior Class. He attended Southeastern Louisiana College where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. After graduating in 1966 with a degree in Business Administration, he began his accounting career with Shell Oil in New Orleans. He was relocated to Houston in 1973 where he was to spend the remainder of his career until retiring in 2003. Calvin also served with the Navy Reserve out of Naval Air Station, New Orleans, beginning in 1966 until being honorably discharged in 1972.

Calvin was a wonderful father very involved in his children’s numerous activities serving routinely as a volunteer coach and never missing a game or scouting event if possible. After retirement, he served as a mentor in the CyFair School District and was recognized with the 2014 Individual Wisdom Award. He was also a volunteer at Owen’s Elementary School working in the vast vegetable garden and at Kleb Woods Nature Preserve.

An avid outdoorsman in his younger days, Calvin enjoyed boating and fishing with his close buddies Jim, John, Mark, Roy, Bernie, and Charlie. For many years the group enjoyed several annual fishing trips (Lunker Lust, Bash, Rumble, Mystery Lake, Cold Weather) with each one focused on highly competitive poker, horseshoe and badminton tournaments. Over the years, his cabin in Green Rich Shores on Lake Livingston became his home away from home where he enjoyed Saturday night poker games, and nightly “Happy Hours, and hanging out with the rest of the “golf cart crew”.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Rodney Stoma. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Terry McMinn and four children, Chris (and Emily) McMinn, Amy (and Kevin) Sager, Matthew McMinn and Daniel McMinn. He has five grandchildren, Kate and Ethan McMinn, and Harrison, Gavin and Baron Sager.

Always competitive, Calvin continued to fight valiantly against this progressive and disabling disease until he had nothing left to give. We are most grateful to his home health caregiver and cruising buddy, Agnes, for the love and attention she gave to Calvin during the last year of his life. We also thank Terry’s family members, our extended Shell and Green Rich Shore families, and other friends and neighbors for their tremendous support and kindness throughout this journey.
