Benjamin Swann Williams, Jr, known to most as Ben, and, to those who loved him most, Papaw, passed away peacefully in his sleep in his beloved Houston home on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at the age of 89.
Born to parents Elizabeth and Benjamin Williams, Sr. on January 26, 1933 in quiet Roxboro, North Carolina, Ben grew up on a tobacco farm. He spent his days alongside his four siblings, before eventually going away to school to pursue a degree in Agriculture at Berea College in Kentucky.
After graduating, Ben served in the Navy from 1956 through 1966. While he served, he flew Naval blimps - perhaps one of his grandchildren’s favorite facts about their Papaw. Quick on his feet and gifted with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, he transitioned to working in sales for the rest of his career.
He married the love of his life, and possibly more importantly, someone who could truly keep him on his toes, Mary Nita McCaffrey from Talladega, Alabama, on April 13, 1955. They were college sweethearts after meeting one night on separate dates, promising to “go steady” after each of them said goodbye to their prospective dates that evening. Together they were proud parents of Elizabeth Rayfield (Williams) Schnell, and Kathryn Louise (Williams) Atkins.
True to his fun and out-going spirit, Ben’s favorite pastimes included golfing in his younger years, and watching, playing, and building his day-to-day routines around games: the Houston Chronicle crossword puzzle and accompanying puzzles every morning, Bingo every Thursday night, and the Game Show Network every waking moment in between! In those rare moments he wasn’t enthralled with a game of some kind, he could be counted on to share a colorful joke or two, whether the moment called for it or not.
Ben was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Nita Williams, daughter, Raye Schnell, son-in-law, Keith Schnell, sister, Nancy Wilson, and brother, Charles Williams. Ben is survived by his brothers, Lacy Williams and Kent Williams, daughter, Kathryn Atkins, and his four beautiful grandchildren, Mary Alyson Atkins, Meagan Atkins, Mark Atkins, Jr. and Darian Schnell.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate this wonderful man during a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, Texas.
We kindly ask that in lieu of flowers and for those desiring to please make memorial contributions in Ben’s name, to a charity of your choice.
