Austin L. Coleman born August 5, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Austin graduated from Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana in 1966. He attended Riverside City College in Riverside, California and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968.
Austin’s service to God included his longtime commitment and membership at Southwest Community Christian Center “The Bridge”. He fully gave his life to Christ and served as a Deacon. He joyfully worshipped the Lord as a member of the Choir. Austin was an active Christian brother in the Men’s Fellowship and Seasoned Seniors. He served as an usher and member of the church’s security team.
Austin joined the Houston Police Department in 1983. He served for 27½years and was assigned to the Westside Division. During his career in law enforcement he also served the Beechnut Division.
He was a passionate Bid Whist card player, Chicago sports enthusiast, barbeque chef, and movie collector.
Austin loved his family and friends. He leaves to cherish his memories childhood sweetheart and devoted wife Tommisina “Tommi” Jones; daughter Robin Coleman Houston (Michael), and son TSgt. David Coleman USAF; two grandchildren, April and Dion, who were the joy of his life; his mother and father, Augustine and Anne Coleman; 2 sisters, Eva Janet Coleman Harris (Clarence) and Linda Coleman (Michael); his nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends. Austin was welcomed to heaven by his brother Michael Coleman and his grandson JaVaughn Houston.
Visitations will be held Friday, May 20, 2011, 9a.m. to 5p.m. at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home and Saturday, May 21, 2011 10a.m. to 11a.m. at Southwest Community Christian Center “The Bridge” 14880 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, TX 77083. Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. at the church.
