Arlene F. Miller

Arlene F. Miller passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, October 30, 2011 after her long and couragous battle with cancer. Arlene was born January 26, 1944 in Manchester, New Hampshire to Emile and Frances Soucy. She grew up in New England and graduated from St. Anslems College School of Nursing in 1965. She began her nursing career in Boston, then moved on to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She worked post partum, newborn nursery, preemie nursery along with a 9 month hiatus to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to learn newborn intensive care. She returned to Mt. Sinai to initiate the start of a newborn ICU. She married Gerald Miller in 1968 and soon started a family. The Millers moved to Houston in 1975. In 1977, she began a 35 year long career at Memorial Southwest Hospital where her exuberant energy and beautiful smile was an inspiration to so many. Arlene worked twenty years of night shifts as a staff nurse on the 5th floor. During that time she was not only raising her sons along with half the neighborhood and some of her staff, but also helping to run a family restaurant and successfully fighting her battle with breast cancer. From 1998 to the present, she gradually made her way up to the job as Director of the Family Place at Memorial Hermann Hospital where she is so very loved, respected and admired. She was a born leader whose energy and drive was something to behold. It seemed she never took a break and she never complained. Along the way, she received many awards and nominations for excellence in nursing, recognition for her support of March of Dimes and in 2008, Memorial Hermann's Most Energetic. Arlene was an excellent nurse, the best of friends and a truly beautiful person. Most of all, she was the best mom in the world. Though she was called mom by so many, she is survived by her sons, Chris and Randy Miller and his wife, Nicole; her beloved granddaughter, Natalie; her brother, Ed Soucy; nephews, Bill and Jim Soucy; nieces, Robin Dunmeyer and Sandy Leblanc and all their families. She is also survived by her dearest and closest friends and their children as well as her staff and colleagues at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, who she always considered family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the March of Dimes or the Wounded warriors Project. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011, 3-9 pm at Forest Park Westheimer. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 4, 2011, 10 am at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 5356 11 Street, Katy, TX.
