James Compton Chapman

James Compton Chapman, age 82, of Fayetteville, North Carolina passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2024. Born on December 31, 1941, he lived a life marked by deep dedication to his family, his nation, and his Christian faith.

James served with distinction in the U.S. Army for 21 years, exemplifying the courage and commitment expected of the elite group of the Special Forces, in which he served. He served two campaigns in Vietnam and earned many commendations during his career, including the Army Commendation Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and NCO Professional Development MEdal. He was a master HALO parachutist and a member of the United States Army South Command (USARO) Parachute Team-"The Jumping Ambassadors". After many deployments around the world and a distinguished career, James retired from the military as Master Sergeant. He coached the award winning rifle team of Ohio State University in the early 1970s. His post military career was as a mechanic at Purolator, where he continued to apply the discipline and skills he honed in the armed forces until his retirement.

Beyond his professional life, James was a lion-hearted man who prioritized the well-being of others above his own. His sense of humor and twinkle in his eye lightened man challenging moments. He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Marianne; sons, James David and Michael (Barbara); grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Heather, and Natalie; and his sister, Sue Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Verna Chapman, and his brother, Danny Chapman. His legacy of kindness, service, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A graveside service with military honors will take place on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
