Patrick Donald Winston

Patrick Donald (“Pat”) Winston passed away on the evening of April 8, 2014 with his wife Mana by his side. Son of the late Robert Warn Winston, M.D., and his late wife, Kathryn Lucille McNeely Winston, Pat was born on September 22, 1948, in Spokane, Washington. He spent his youth in Newport and Diamond Lake, Washington, where he loved swimming, water skiing and antique cars, and where he restored a 1940 Ford before graduating from high school. Pat studied at Skagit Valley Community College and earned a bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Washington State University. He traveled through France and studied the wine regions and served two years in the US Navy, including a tour through Vietnam. Based in Pearl Harbor, he made Honolulu, Hawaii, his home for the rest of his life. Throughout his life, Pat returned to the Newport area frequently to be with friends.

An energetic and committed entrepreneur, Pat began his professional life by starting a furniture company, Winston Company, which sold home furnishings and condominium packages to hotels and individuals. Moving into real estate, he purchased twenty condominiums, one at a time, renovated each one carefully, and rented them to tourists from around the world. Pat brought the same care and attention, in his lengthy term as board president of the Hawaiian King Condo Association, to ensuring the quality and upkeep of the building itself. Pat built a large and loyal clientele, many of whom return annually to his now nine-unit properties. Clients have appreciated his careful attention to units and especially his commitment to clients’ needs. They write admiringly of Pat’s honesty, decency, and attentiveness, traits Pat attributed to his father’s influence and the work ethic he had evinced in his professional life as a medical doctor.

A near lifelong enthusiast and owner of Corvettes, Pat was a former member of the Honolulu Corvette Club. At the time of his passing, Pat owned two Corvettes, which were kept at his second home in Mesquite, Nevada, an area he and his wife loved dearly. He was actively involved in the Republican Party in Hawaii and in planning the reunions held by surviving members of his father’s military unit. Always interested in the history of his family and hometown, he remained devoted to his childhood friends and to the many others he befriended in the course of his life. Pat will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His abundant energy, generosity, and love of life have marked us all.

Pat is survived by his loving wife, Mana, as well as by his siblings, Robert Warn (Joan) Winston of Surprise, Arizona, Jane Winston of Evanston, Illinois, and Jeffrey (Susan) Winston of Altadena, California, as well as by nine nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and nephews.
