John B. Cheek, 91, WWII veteran died on September 14, 2014. John B. Cheek was born in Oolitic, Indiana to William F and Nancy Jane Cheek on August 7, 1923. The family moved to Johnson County, where they lived until John was drafted in the Army in 1943. John was proud of his service to our country, serving in England, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, during WWII. He survived the Battle of the Bulge. He was in the 556th anti-aircraft artillery, Automatic Weapons Division. He received many service medals including two bronze stars. John was a humble and selfless man always worrying about everyone else. He had a long happy life. John was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved by all who knew him. John is survived by his loving wife of almost 68 years, Helen Goodwin Cheek, and four children, Carol Joye Cheek, Sandra Suriano, Beverly Sue Vollstedt (husband, Tom), and Ronald Cheek (wife, April Dawn), all of Homosassa. There are 8 grand-children and 12 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge 107 F&AM, in Franklin, Indiana, Blanton-Thompson American Legion Post 155 in Crystal River, Florida as well as the Disabled Veterans Post in Brooksville, Florida. John came to Homosassa 34 years ago from Franklin, Indiana. He was a plumber for many years and worked in Hospital Maintenance at Franklin Memorial Hospital and The Indiana Methodist Home before retiring in 1980. Funeral Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday September 20, 2014 at 11AM from Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, Florida. Interment follows at Fountains Memorial Park.
