Alice Evelyn Heim, 90, of Homosassa, Fl. passed away Jan. 27, 2014 in Palm Coast, Fl. A native of New York, N.Y. born August 28, 1923 to Robert Prescott Hausrath and Gladys Cook Bass, she came to the area in 1986 from Port Washington, Wisc. Alice graduated from Ponce De Leon High School in Coral Gables, Fl. and she was a Christian Scientist. Her memberships include P.E.O. International, Daughters of The American Revolution, Past Worthy Matron of The Eastern Star, Social Order of the Beauceant, and a Leader/Trainer for The Girl Scouts of America. She began her working life during World War II as a clerk/typist for the Department of War in Miami, Florida. She also worked as an office assistant, a bookkeeper, and a continuity writer for a local radio station before finding her passion as a designer of crochet and tatting patterns. Her designs were published in many craft magazines and created a booklet of 20 projects published as “Crochet for Wedding and Home.” She taught adult education classes in crochet and in tatting in Wisconsin and Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Dallas W. Heim Jr.; 5 sisters Dorothy Schwartz, Eleanor Young, Lois McCloud, Jeanne Thomson, and Beatrice Esty Hogberg. Survivors include 2 daughters :Leslie Herkamp and husband Nathan of Palm Coast, Fl. and Lauren Pelc and husband Richard of Schaumburg, Il.; 4 grandchildren: Sarah Herkamp of Gainesville, FL., Nathan Herkamp and wife Leigh of Rochester, N.Y., Rachael Edison and husband William of Buffalo Grove, Il. and Christopher Pelc and wife Noelany of Denton, TX; great-granddaughter Evelyn Luise Herkamp of Rochester, N.Y.; sister in-law Florence Custer of Davidsville, Pa.
A celebration of her life will be held Friday February 28, 2014 11:00 AM at Wilder Funeral Home, 4890 S. Suncoast Blvd. Homosassa, Fl. with a reception to follow. Interment services will take place at Florida National Cemetery at 2:00 PM on the same day.
