Susie Harris Elliott died at home Wednesday, June 12th at the age of 98. Susie graduated from Birmingham Southern College with a degree in chemistry winning many academic honors and serving as her senior class vice president. After graduation, she worked as a medical laboratory technologist. At Birmingham Southern, she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and stayed connected with many of her sorority sisters throughout her life.
Susie married Harry M. Elliott, a close friend of her brothers, on New Year’s Eve 1947. They made their home in Birmingham with their 3 sons and a daughter and built a life with her immediate and extended family. She loved her family and leaves them with wonderful memories of Sunday lunches, delicious meals, and above all, her homemade cakes. She was an avid reader and cherished the friendships she made over 70 years as a member of the Belvedere Study Club.
She loved the Lord and served Him through her work at Trinity United Methodist Church, in Homewood, Alabama. She taught Sunday School for over 30 years, was an active leader in the United Methodist Women, gave her time in mission work, and participated in many influential committees.
Susie was predeceased by her husband, Harry M. Elliott, her parents Rev. William and Margaret Harris and her siblings. She is survived by her four children, George Elliott (Alice), Mark Elliott (Lisa), Bill Elliott (Rebecca), and Susie Lengel (Bob). She is also survived by six grandchildren Laura Short (Scott), Glenn Elliott (Lauren), Paul Lengel, Ben Lengel, Thomas Lengel, Grace Elliott and three great-grandchildren Emma, Evie, and Lucy.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 -12:00 on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood, Alabama. A memorial service will follow visitation at Noon.
In lieu of flowers, Susie’s family requests donations to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
