Stephen Mallory Pierce

Stephen Mallory Pierce of Birmingham passed away at his home surrounded by his family on March 9th 2016. He is predeceased by his mother Kathleen Mallory Pierce, his father Laurens Walter Pierce and his brother Laurens Hubbell Pierce. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Prescott Pierce, his sons Stephen Mallory Pierce, Jr. and Adam Prescott Pierce (Stefanie); grandson Garth Truelove Wright (Caroline); great-grandchildren Henry Pierce Wright and Theodore Philip Wright.

Mallory was born and raised in the Ansley Park neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated form Boys High in Atlanta and then enlisted in the Army Air Corp during WWII. After his service he attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the Auburn Knights Orchestra. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Mallory settled in Birmingham in the 1950s where he worked for Associated Engineers. He later acquired the fire protection engineering firm and it became Pierce and Associates where he worked until he retired in the late 1990s.

Mallory was also a working musician and an avid supporter of music in Birmingham. He played trumpet in jazz combos, both swing and Dixieland, big bands and as a pit musician for performances at Town and Gown Theatre and the Jewish Community Center. He was a long time board member of the Birmingham Chamber Music Society. In 1978 he became a founding member of the Superjazz Big Band playing with the group until his retirement from music in 2007.

He was a member of South Highland Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon and taught Sunday school with his wife, Jean for many years.

Mallory was lovingly cared for through his long illness by his family and devoted caregivers Ruby Lee, Felicia Major, Brenda Sumpter and Annie Roscoe.
