Joseph “Joey” Merriam passed away peacefully on September 1, 2021 at the age of 53, after an extended illness. Joey was preceded in death by his grandparents Fred and Leona (Vallier) Merriam and T.O. and Mildred (Barker) Sumrall. He is survived by his parents Glenn and Esther Merriam; sisters Edie (Lemond) Irvin, and Suzette (Keith) Foster. He is lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews Andrea (Brad) Singleton, Will Irvin, Merriam Mock, and J.T. Foster; great-nephew Wilder Singleton; and numerous cousins and friends.
Joey was born in Homestead, Florida but lived the last 35 years in Hoover, Alabama. He graduated from the Hueytown Multi-Handicap Center and attended the ARC of Jefferson County. He was an active member of Hunter Street Baptist Church and loved spending Sundays with his friends in the Special Connections small group. Joey loved listening to music, watching TV, and spending time with his family. Some of his favorite treats included Diet Coke, M&Ms, and his most favorite butter cookies.
Joey was dearly loved by all who met him, and he will be missed here on earth, but we know his earthly body is healed and he is celebrating in Heaven with Jesus today.
Joey’s family would like to thank his hospital, home health, and hospice caregivers who showed such love and support to him during his illness, including UAB, Ascension Home Health (Nurse Sue), and Compassus Hospice (Nurse Selena).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to “Unless U” (www.unlessu.org); the Special Connections ministry at Hunter Street Baptist Church (www.hunterstreet.org); or another organization of your choosing which supports adults and children with developmental disabilities.
A service celebrating Joey’s life will be held on Friday, September 10, 2021, in the Chapel at Hunter Street Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M.with the service beginning at 1:00.
