CULOTTA, Joseph Anthony, age 93, of Birmingham, peacefully passed away Wednesday morning, March 21, 2012. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Culotta was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Frances “Marie” Lovoy Culotta. He is survived by his brothers, Dominic and Jake Culotta; sisters, Constance Culotta and Josephine Culotta Jovings; daughter, Pamela (Anthony) DiPiazza; son, Michael (Carla Green); five grandchildren, Jeremy DiPiazza (Michele), David, Aaron and Rebecca DiPiazza, and Chandler Culotta; great grandchildren, Benjamin, William, Anna Marie, Abigail, Micah DiPiazza and several nieces and nephews.
Joe served bravely in the U.S. Army from June 1941 to October 1945. As Technical Sergeant, Company M, 114th Infantry, 44th Division, he earned the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in action during the Second World War. After his honorable discharge, he worked for Edison Brothers Shoes until his retirement in 1983.
Visitation will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mountain Brook at 9:30 am on Friday, March 23, 2012 followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30. Burial will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care, or UAB Department of Neurology, Alzheimer’s research Fund.
