Jo Ann Curtis was born on February 1, 1930. She graduated from Ramsey High School and Birmingham Southern College, where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She loved the Birmingham area and lived her entire life here.
Jo Ann passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024 after a courageous battle with Parkinson's. She is survived by her daughter Kethryn Damron and her son David Evans (Terry), her grandchildren Paul (Debbie) and Mark (Beth) Damron, Kinsley and Hannah Evans. and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Kathryn Hunter, son Richard Evans, husband Tom Curtis, siblings Walter Hunter, Frances Brush and Bob Hunter.
She loved her many family, church and community roles. Jo Ann was a very nurturing and caring mother. She was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church for over 50 years and many of those years as an active participant with the John Wesley Class. Though she enjoyed worked first for R.A. Brown Real Esate Co., then the Alabama Republican Party. ---joining her brothers at Hunter Furniture Co. was the most fulfilling. Their father had started the business and the store was a fixture downtown for over 80 years and a place where customers were warmly welcomed and treated.
Jo Ann had an incredible memory and a keen interest in meeting and knowing others. If you were at any type of event with her, you arrived early, checked the arrangements and then would meet and know almost everyone soon thereafter. She looked forward to her monthly gathering of long-time friends from high school and college. They would meet for lunch, bridge and many other types of games. According to her friends, she was a very talented but also a very fair competitor.
Later in her life, Jo Ann met Tom Curtis and they were married in November 1995. She loved having daughter Donna Boren, son Tommy (Linda), and their children Alan Boren (Robin), Lindsay Day (John). Taylor Curtis, Haley Beatty (Luke) and Miles Curtis as part of her family. Jo Ann and Tom had many mutual interests such as their church, trips to the beach, fishing and college football.
Jo Ann was sustained by her immense love for family, friends and faith.
Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Canterbury United Methodist at 2:00 followed by a memorial service at 3:00. Both will be at the Canterbury Chapel.
