Bodden, Elizabeth “Libby” Jean Burke, age 93, of Homewood. Born September 5, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama, first child of Cecil Henry Burke and Jean Marie McClure Burke. Died July 16, 2024. Raised and lived all her life in the Birmingham area, mostly in Homewood. Graduated Shades Cahaba High School 1948, where she was Valedictorian. Graduated Birmingham-Southern College 1952, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Married Wilfred Rupert Bodden, Jr. in 1952; their marriage produced 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and (thus far) 2 great-grandchildren.
Known to her friends by her nickname “Libby”, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her “Lalo”, which came from her joyful greetings to them of “Hello! Hello! Hello!”
An active member of Independent Presbyterian Church, she served as a deacon, and for 9 summers participated in medical missions to Honduras with her husband, assisting in providing dental care to remote villages. Her love of literature led her to volunteer for many years at the Homewood Public Library and to serve on its Board of Trustees. For many summers, she organized the family’s summer camping trips that took them to National and State Parks throughout 46 U.S. states and 5 Canadian provinces. She remained active with her Pi Phi sisters who have met regularly as the “Lunch Bunch” for over 60 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, her parents, and by her brother Cecil Anderson Burke, Sr. of Birmingham. She is survived by her children: Rupert Bodden, III (Marleen), Christie Haffner (Jay), Frances Woodruff (Bill); grandchildren: Patrick Bodden (Erin), Jacob Bodden, Mary Bodden, Katie Haffner (Taylor), Burke Haffner, Cherry Woodruff; great-grandchildren: Lena Bodden and Opal Bodden.

Burial will be at a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery on Saturday, July 20, at 9:00 am. Visitation will be later that day at 1:00 pm at Independent Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, with a Memorial service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Independent Presbyterian Church Community Missions or to Homewood Public Library.
