Dyer was born on October 1, 1949, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Dr. Dyer Carlisle Jr. and Fleda Baines. A 1967 graduate of Berry High School, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Samford University in 1971. Dyer later earned a Master's degree from Jacksonville State University in 1981 and completed his Post-Master's Education Specialist degree at the University of Montevallo in 1998.
Dyer devoted his life to teaching, coaching, and mentoring young people to help them grow into successful and responsible members of society. His career began at the high school level as a coach and teacher at West End, Haleyville, and Banks High Schools. He then made a significant impact at the collegiate level coaching football at Jacksonville State University, University of Southern Mississippi, and Mississippi State University. After many years in college athletics, Dyer returned to the high school level to teach and coach at Austin High School.
In 1995, Dyer transitioned to school administration and served as Assistant Principal at Homewood Middle School before becoming the Principal of Homewood High School. After retiring from the Homewood school system, he jumped at the opportunity to return to coaching as an Assistant Football Coach at Birmingham-Southern College. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to shaping the next generation of students were hallmarks of his 42+ year career. Throughout his life, he was a tireless advocate for the success and well-being of young people, whether in the classroom, on the field, or as a mentor and advisor.
