Dr. James Austin Davis Jr.

Dr. James Austin Davis, Jr. was born on August 8, 1921 and died on July 20, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Ingram Davis, James Austin Davis, his sister Eleanor Howton (Charles) and his first wife, Mary Pappandreou Davis.

He is survived by his wife LaVerne Sandlin Davis and his children Debby Denson (Bill), Jimmy Davis (Mary Todd), Patsy Dreher (Alan), Kathy Berry (Dewees)- Franklin, Tennessee, and Johnny Davis (Eulalie)- Columbus, Mississippi. He had thirteen grandchildren: Patsy Pyle, Austin Davis (Amanda), Todd Davis (Lauren), Tate Davis (Stefanie), Bragan Petrey (Banks), Maggie Baggett (Evan), Julie Goodkind (Travis), John Berry (Janie), Davis Berry (Lindsey), Skip Berry (Becca), Florence Matthews (Mark), Mary Katherine Davis, and Fairfax Davis. He had thirteen great-grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Bessemer High School and the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) where he was a member of the honorary fraternity ODK, Jasons, and social fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He completed his medical internship at Jefferson Hillman Hospital (Birmingham). He entered the U. S. Army Medical Corps as a Captain and was stationed with the 361st Station Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, in the Army of the Occupation. On return to the states, he completed his post graduate education at University Hospital in Birmingham. He entered into practice and was one of the founders of the Southside Internal Medical Group which became Southview Internal Medical Group. He thoroughly enjoyed his practice, regarding his patients as his friends.

He was an avid reader, bridge player, and golfer, often enjoying a trip to the beach with his golfing buddies.

He was past president of the Jefferson County Medical Society and the St. Vincent’s Hospital staff, past member of the Jefferson County Board of Health, member of the American College of Physicians, and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. He was a member of the Country Club of Birmingham and The Club. His church was St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry, and was privileged to be twice senior warden during his service.

The funeral will be on Monday, July 23 at 2:00pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Rd. Visitation will begin at 12 noon in Graham Hall at the church.
