Born in 1945, David was the second of four children of Paul and Kathryn Streit. Early on, the family settled in Aurora, IL, where David graduated from Marmion Military Academy. He attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, graduating in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and later obtained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification.
While in Milwaukee, he met his soulmate, Claudia Streit. They married the week after his college graduation and returned to Aurora, where they lived for the next 30 years and raised their two sons.
David joined Equipto Inc. in Aurora after college graduation, where he worked for 30 years, rising through the ranks from Staff Accountant to Chief Financial Officer (CFO). He went on to hold CFO positions at Chroma Corp. in Crystal Lake, IL, and at EPL Inc. in Birmingham. He was good with numbers and had a talent for remembering all the important aspects of the tax code and accounting principles, leading to his lifelong passion for efficiently managing businesses. His colleagues noted how focused he was on the finer details of fiscal discipline and adhering to the company budget.
David and Claudia loved Birmingham and stayed there in retirement. The friendly people, temperate weather and beautiful rolling hills were some of the attractions. David made many good friends through his golfing group and in their local community.
No matter where he lived, David remained a passionate Chicago sports fan, cheering on the Bears, Blackhawks and White Sox through their ups and downs. David was a lifelong golfer, and he most enjoyed the fellowship with his friends and sons on the course and in the clubhouse. A favorite memory was a pilgrimage he took with his golf buddies to Augusta, GA, to watch The Masters golf tournament. David also attended many PGA golf tournaments in the Chicagoland area and volunteered for Senior PGA tournaments in Birmingham during his retirement.
David dedicated much of his free time to volunteering. He was an active member of the Illinois Jaycees and Illinois CPA Society. During the many years his sons played ice hockey, David supported amateur hockey at the local, state and national levels, and participated in the USA Hockey annual meetings in Colorado Springs, CO. Later in life, he became an active member of his retirement community where he participated in many social and enrichment events, served as a resident ambassador, and volunteered wherever needed. In particular, he developed a passion for improving the retirement community’s library and helped organize their sizable collection of books.
David will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 54 years, Claudia; son, David (Sue); son, Peter (Sasha); three grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan and Renz; his sister, Carolyn (Steve) Beck, his brother, Paul (Connie) Streit; his brother-in-law Joseph Schaefers, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Kathryn Streit, and his sister, Miriam Schaefers.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in David’s memory to the Parkinson’s Foundation. https://www.parkinson.org/
