Carolyn Sartain Brown, 80, of Birmingham, passed away Monday, October 3, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, William James Brown; parents, Claude Franklin and Irma Hathcote Sartain; sisters, Ina Walton and Betty Sue Lollar; brothers, Sam and Ray Sartain; and grandson, Matthew David Brown. She is survived by her brothers, William Ramage Sartain and Edwin Franklin Sartain (Beckie); sons, William David Brown (Shannon) and James Alan Brown (Suzanne); grandchildren, Elijah Franklin Brown, Jacob Alan Brown, Rebecca Brown Jackson (Zach), and Stephanie Brown Edwards (Jarrod); great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Edwards; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Carolyn was a native of Oakman, Alabama and a 1953 graduate of Oakman High School. She was a long-time member of Huffman and Mountain Brook Baptist churches. Her many talents and hobbies included singing, playing the piano and flute as well as serving on the Birmingham Beautification Board for many years. She also gave back to her community by retiring from Jefferson County School System as an interpreter for many hearing impaired students in Birmingham and surrounding areas.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 5 from 5-7 p.m. at Ridout’s Valley Funeral Home in Homewood. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 6 at First Baptist Church in Oakman, Alabama ( 161 Wateroak Street 35579).
