He leaves his wife of 40 years, Hye Gilmore; his sons, Danny and Andy Gilmore; his granddaughter, Destini Gilmore and many close friends.
Born and raised in Chicago, the son of Nathan and Mary Gilmore, he moved quite a few times and finally settled in Plantation and Davie Florida
In his early teenage years, Mr. Gilmore sold newspapers on street corners and would get into fist fights in order to maintain the corners he sold from. After moving to South Florida, he graduated from Stranahan High School in 1960, where he was a wrestler and danced Adagio. One day he had an Adagio competition and rushed over to an important wrestling match right after the competition ended. After high school he went on to attend the University of Florida.
After college he joined the United States army. While in the Army Intelligence during the Vietnam War, he was a decoder. One day he decoded a message and kept a small village from being bombed. Hundreds of people that he never met him got to continue their lives because of this act. The information was moved up to a higher level and they used the information by telling the opposing side that the army knew they planned on bombing an innocent village. As soon as the army officers conveyed the message it stopped the impending attack on this village saving numerous lives that will never know that he was the hero that saved their lives.
During his Army days he met his wife in South Korea. He was set up on the date by his army buddy and his wife was set up on the date by her sister. As they sat down across from each other, they quickly found out that she did not speak English and he did not speak Korean. Luckily, while in the army intelligence he had to study many languages and they found a common language in Japanese. This was one of his favorite stories to tell. John went on to marry Hye Suk On September, 25, 1976. On February 27, 1982 and May 23, 1984 John welcomed two sons into their lives. He never stopped showing how proud he was of them.
He was a devoted father, and husband. He always saw the positive aspects in everyone and was always willing to help in any way that he could. His favorite pass times were watching war movies, listening to 70's music and talking to anyone and everyone. He was the type of man that was never late for an appointment and always put everyone else's needs and wants before his. He would be the first person at church and 3 hours early to every exercise session he had. His laughter was genuine and his smile unique. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all that even sat down to have one conversation with him. There always was and always will be one John Gilmore in our hearts and memories.
