Bernie was born in Columbus, IN July 14, 1937 to John B. Kress Sr. and Margaret Kress. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving honorably from 1955 - 1959. Bernie married the love of his life, Marlene, in South Bend, IN on May 6, 1961 cherishing 62 years together.
They moved to Michigan in 1969. Bernie enjoyed outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, boating, golfing, and camping with his family. Over his lifetime he dabbled in a variety of hobbies ranging from model trains to small animal suburban farming. Bernie was also a true family man, early on doing Indian Guides with his sons, 4H with his daughters, coaching little league and cheering wildly during their sporting events. He had an extraordinary talent for winning at cards and board games!
In his early career Bernie worked as an insurance adjuster, later opening Kress Adjustment company in Lansing, MI. He eventually retired from Adjusting Services Unlimited in Okemos, MI where he ran the Catastrophe Claims Division. He was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church in Lansing, and later St. Isidor in Laingsburg, MI and St. Paul’s National Catholic Church in Belleview, FL. Bernie was an active member in many parish activities, leading the St. Casimir Corn Roast, Men’s Club, Fish Fry, the Cursillo Movement, and Prayer Meetings.
After his retirement in 1997, Bernie enjoyed the winter months in The Villages, FL and summers at Holiday Shores in Durand, MI. Again, being very active in initiating community activities such as the Holiday Shores annual golf tournament. Bernie spent the last three years in Holland, MI enjoying bird watching, puzzles and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A father figure to all, a man of faith, Bernie loved unconditionally. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, his son Michael Kress, daughter-in-law, Teresa Kress and 6 of his siblings.
He is survived by his wife Marlene; sister Anita Kress; children Monica (David) McGovern, David (Rachel) Kress, Peggy (Jared) Dell, and Suzie (Patrick) Dailey; 13 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and one on the way; many extended family and friends.
A memorial Mass with Military Honors will be at 11:00am, Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 480 152nd Ave., Holland, MI.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 12 from 10:00am until the time of the service at Our Lady of the Lake.
