Madeline Fay Gilliland

Madeline F. “Made” Gilliland, 92, passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at St. Lukes Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. She was born on April 29, 1922 to Raymond and Freida (Huber) Eberle. Madeline was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Holgate, where she was active in the Ladies Guild and also taught Bible school. In past years, Madeline also was active with the Holgate Band Boosters.

An excellent storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor, Madeline and her husband, Robert, enjoyed their life together. They loved to travel, and were proud of seeing 50 states and 50 countries over the years. as well as dozens of covered bridges throughout the country. Their home in Holgate was a gathering place for all of their children’s friends. Most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, telling them stories of the “old days” and enjoying their company.

Madeline is survived by her children, R. Lynn (Karen) Gilliland, Larry Gilliland, and Lonnie (Diane) Gilliland; five grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and brothers and sister, Darrell Eberle, Juanita Schnitkey, and Keith Eberle. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 65 years, Robert Gilliland; daughter-in-law, Camille Gilliland; sister, Ethel Dietrick; and brothers, Donald, Robert, Arthur, James, and Nelson Eberle.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 15 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm at Snyder Funeral Home in Holgate. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, October 16 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Route 108 & Road J, in Holgate, Ohio. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. .
