Warren Barclay Henry M.D.

He was born August 6, 1923 in Chattanooga and was the descendant of two pioneer Hamilton County families. He grew up in North Chattanooga, attended Normal Park elementary School and Baylor School, graduating Cum Honore as Salutatorian of the Class of 1940. He entered the University of Chattanooga and completed three years of pre-med academics before he was called to service in the Navy V-12 program.

In 1944 he entered Tulane University Medical School and graduated in the Summer of 1947. He was chosen for a surgical Internship at Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, VA.He was chosen for a surgical Internship at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH in 1950, but because of glaucoma, several ophthalmic surgeries were required and he changed his specialty from pulmonary surgery to pulmonary medicine.

He was called to service in 1954 and spent the next three years as Head of the Chest Disease service at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, North Chicago, IL. He returned to Chattanooga in 1957 to join the staff of the Tennessee Chest Disease Hospital, becoming the Medical Director in 1959. He directed the patient program for treating pulmonary tuberculosis until the close of the Hospital in 1975, at which time he continued direction of the tuberculosis Control program in the Southeast region of Tennessee and the Chest Clinic at the local Chattanooga – Hamilton County Health Department. Dr. Henry retired from active clinical service in January, 1995, after more than 40 years of public health service.

He was a longtime member of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical association, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association and the Trudeau Society, which became the American Lung Association. He was President of the Tennessee Thoracic Society 1967-1968 and was Chairman of the ad hoc Committee that designed and completed the successful Sabin oral polio vaccine in Hamilton County in 1963 and 1964.

He was Medical Society representative to the Air Pollution Control bureau for 12 years and an enthusiastic early supporter and member of the Board of Directors of WTCI, Channel 45 TV.

Dr. Henry was very proud of the fact that he lived through the era of the development of antibiotic and surgical treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis, allowing patients to anticipate a cure of their disease instead of a death sentence.

He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Henry and parents, Ruth Gross Henry Wilson and Carl B. Henry.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Ann Henry, Chattanooga; sons, Scott Henry, Middletown, VA and Larry French, Dallas, TX; brother, Wally Henry; half-sister, Sharon Bancroft; nephew Warren W. “Buddy” (Julia) Henry and various nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 17, 1 PM to 3 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. There will not be a funeral service.
