Phillip Dennis Smartt passed away peacefully at his home on November 25, 2017. Phil was born on September 15, 1953 and lived his entire life in the Chattanooga area. A graduate of Chattanooga City High School, as a young adult he could most often be found under the hood of his beloved Corvettes or onboard a boat cruising the waterways of East Tennessee. At all stages of his life, he embodied the finest traits of a Southern man, bringing a kind heart, quick wit and a helping hand to anyone who crossed his path. He was a beloved son and brother, father to two, lover of animals, and a friend to all.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles Lane.
Phil is survived by his parents, Norma Lane and Jack (Florence) Smartt, his sister, Gail (John) Reed; his two children, Adam Smartt and Anna Smartt (Dustin) Higdon; and nieces Alison (Zach) Law and Ashley (Dwayne) Condra.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00-11:00 am on December 1st at Chattanooga Funeral Home on Highway 153 with a graveside service immediately following at Hamilton Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family is grateful for gifts in his honor made to the Humane Educational Society of Chattanooga or St. Jude Research Hospital.
