Macon was born on July 7, 1930. He grew up in a fun-loving family in Waynesboro, Virginia, a small town nestled in the foothills of the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains. Macon excelled at football and basketball at Augusta Military Academy. While a cadet at Virginia Military Institute, he met the love of his life, Betty, on a blind date and they married shortly after his graduation in 1953, a marriage that would last 71 years.
Macon joined the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant, and they moved to Enid, Oklahoma where he earned his pilot’s wings and became a B-25 flight instructor. They welcomed the birth of their only child, Joe, in 1955. After serving for five years, Macon accepted a civil engineering position with DuPont that led to a 35 year-long career, first at their facility in Waynesboro, Virginia and later in Chattanooga.
A lover of the outdoors, he spent many enjoyable hours gardening and golfing with his son and friends in his retirement years. He also devoted time to Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church where he shared his knowledge on property related issues.
Macon’s 94 years of earthly life ended on December 7, 2024. His family receives comfort in picturing him with restored movement and hearing in the presence of Jesus and loved ones in heaven. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Bernard, brother Emory, and grandson Preston. He is survived by his wife Betty, son Joe (Cathy), grandson Taylor (Heather), and great-grandsons Atlas and Walter.
There will be no visitation or services.
The family extends a sincere appreciation to Hearth Hospice, and especially to the Assisted Living and the 8th Floor Health Care staff at Alexian Village, who lovingly cared for Macon for many years.
