Johnny and I grew up together. Boy Scouts, Midget league footbal,l and later at ETSU with the Sig Eps. I remember a story that will always remember. We were 13 and playing football for The Optimist team. John who was 5 days younger than me, was sick with the flu or something. His mother said he could not go to the game. (He was our best End), Midget league. But Johnny decided to put on his full uniform and scamper down the pole outside his bedroom, and sneak out to play our game. We knew nothing about him being sick. He played and helped us win! Later, his Mom told him, that he could not play the next week! I will always remember his wonderful humor and devotion to his team. I will always remember a great joke that he told with great delivery and his great friendship at ETSU Sig Ep fraternity, John, you helped make my young life a joy! Bless yor memory Buddy!!!

Johnny and I grew up in Harriman, played midget league football and boy scouts together. He was a great friend. I transferred from UTC playing football. I had to lay out of competition for a year. Transferred and felt a little alone until fellow Harrimanite Jonny and Fred Silvey (also a sig ep came and brought me to the fraternity! Best 2 years of pure college life living in the Sig Ep house. In the summer, we made Daquires at 5p and go into the TV room to watch McHales Navy. 50 years later I still recall those college days as being wonderful tomes. God bless your memory ole buddy!!!


Also just learned of John’s passing. My favorite memory of ETSU was John. Such a class act and wonderful person. So happy he had a loving family. Enjoy heaven with our dear friend Hilda. 

I just learned of John's passing in the ETSU Today magazine. John and I were good friends at ET even though he was a Sig Ep and I was a KA! :) He was a great guy and I know he lived a wonderful life. My fond memories of John will endure.  Best wished to his family.

John and I were fraternity brothers at ETSU, and we enjoyed great times there.  I always looked for John at Homecoming each year, but I don’t know that I saw him since graduation.  I loved his laugh and his sense of humor - he had a great personality, and anyone around him for more than a few minutes liked him.  I only wish I could have seen him over the past few decades - I have missed him and will continue to think about him.  I’m glad to know he was a great family man, that doesn’t surprise me.  My highest condolences to his family....

John was bigger than life and enjoyed every minute with his wonderful family, extended family, and loyal wife, Jamey.   His laugh, his unforgettable phrases, and his unconditional love  will be continually missed.  God Bless his family during this sad time.  May you share the many good memories forever.

First met John playing basketball against him at Jewish Community Center the team John played for was the Horny Toads they had agreat team John had good skills and played very physical He knocked me down pretty hard then put his big hand down to help me up then  I got to here his great laugh and his laugh was the best John was a great family man that always lit up when you asked him about his kids God Bless to the Jones family

Big John O was a witty & intelligent brother in-law...my family has so many fond memories of vacationing in Chattanooga & seeing the family over all the holidays! Sister Jamey has another angel watching over her now!

For my good friend Jonesy.  I knew John for over 40 yrs working with him at First Federal  and beyond as appraisers.  We shared many memories during that time.  I remember him as one of the smartest men I have ever known. He had the quickest wit and never forgot a name. He was a true Vol fan but above all was a true and loyal friend who is greatly missed. Oh, wow! So many of our young & middle adult years were shared with Jamey & John. There are so many fabulous memories to look back on, so many it’s overwhelming. We are thankful John loved the Lord so we know where he is now doing the “Walk of Life”! John, we have always loved you & will miss you, our friend. You are our Sultan of Swing.
