Joe Tidwell Spencer was born on Sunday, May 11, 1924 in Burns, Tennessee and passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at his home in Chattanooga. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Blanche Spencer and his older brother Dan Spencer, all of Dickson. He graduated from Dickson High School in 1941 and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1948, with a degree in Agriculture. He was in the U.S. Air Corps (US Air Force) for 3 years as a Bombardier on a B-24, flying 10 combat missions in the Pacific during WWII. Joe married Margaret Blanche Pyle on January 22, 1949 and had 3 children, Linda Spencer Harris, Nan Spencer Snyder and Danny Spencer. Margaret died on July 10, 1962. He married JoAnn Campbell on May 4, 1974 and had 2 step-children, Steve Campbell and Karen Campbell Brown. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service for 31 years, retiring in February, 1982 and was inducted into the Hamilton County Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1997. Joe attended Signal Mountain church of Christ for 65 years, teaching Bible School classes for over 40 years and served as an Elder for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Spencer, Chattanooga, children Linda Harris, League City, TX, Steve Campbell, Hixson, TN., Nan Snyder, Alpharetta, GA., Karen Brown, Hixson, TN and Danny Spencer, Maryville, TN., 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. He was a huge Tennessee Volunteer and Atlanta Braves fan. Services will be held at Signal Mountain church of Christ on Wednesday, July 17, with visitation from 10am-12 Noon with services at 12. There will be a graveside service at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Partners 4 Africa through Signal Mountain Church.
