Born in 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa, to the late Kenneth L. and Dorothy Gould Mann, he spent his formative years in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-47, then returned to Iowa to attend Fort Dodge Junior College. There, he met Helen Louise Feelhaver in chemistry class, and in 1949 they married.
After he graduated from Iowa State University in 1951 with a degree in industrial arts education, the couple moved to High Point, where he taught industrial arts at High Point Central High School until retiring in 1987.
For most of those years, he assisted at athletic events, primarily handling tickets and gate receipts for football and basketball games and wrestling matches. After the event, he would count the money, and then drive to the bank – with the family dog riding shotgun – to deposit the money.
For two years he was a volunteer assistant with the junior varsity baseball team. He had played baseball at Fort Dodge Senior High School, and was manager for the Iowa State baseball team.
He also was a timer and judge during track meets, and he worked the third annual North Carolina High School Girls’ Basketball Tournament that was held in High Point in 1974.
At Central, he served as adviser for the freshman and sophomore classes, was co-chairman of the Career Day program and was a supervisor for the SAT for 30 years.
He was named the N.C. Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year in 1965, was president of the North Carolina Industrial Arts Association from 1958-59, was editor of the NCIAA newsletter, was chairman of the host committee for the North Carolina Industrial Arts Exposition at High Point Central in 1969, and was chairman and originator of the Teacher Service Award Committee honoring teachers with at least 25 years of service in industrial arts.
He served on the North Carolina Governor’s Advisory Committee on Industrial Arts, was an industrial arts textbook evaluator for the State Textbook Committee and was a member of several state and national education organizations, including life membership in the American Industrial Arts Association.
He and his wife became members of the First Presbyterian Church in High Point in 1951, where he was a deacon, a counselor and was a leader for the Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops sponsored by the church.
He was preceded in death by Helen Mann, his wife of 62 years; and son David.
He is survived by son, Steve, and his wife, Cindy, of Stokesdale; grandson Jake, his wife, Samantha, and children Chance, Gavin, Willow, Mackenzie and Emmett, of Chapel Hill; grandson Josh, his wife, Bishop, and their son, Wake, of Mebane; grandson Jeremy and his daughter, Emma; grandson Jonathan and wife, Diane, of Burlington; four nieces, and two nephews.
