Fred W. Hayes, 87 of Ligonier, PA passed May 18,2024. He was born August 31, 1936, in Mt. Pleasant, PA. A son of the late Fred D. and Tura M. (Knopsnider) Hayes. Fred graduated from the former East Huntingdon Township High School in 1954. He was also a graduate of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh in 1958. After he graduated, he was employed by Burns Drug Store in Mt. Pleasant, PA.
In July of 1965, Fred purchased the Moonly Drug Store in Ligonier, PA. He owned and operated Hayes Pharmacy until September of 1995. After closing his store, Fred donated several pharmacy antiques to the Elmer H. Grimm Museum at the University of Pittsburgh.
After selling his business, Fred and his wife Regina moved to Scotland Neck, NC. He was employed by Rite Aid and Kerr Drug until his retirement in February of 2003.
Fred and his wife then moved back to Ligonier, PA and enjoyed their retired years among their family and friends.
Fred was a member of the First Church of the Brethren in Waterford, PA where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director and on the Men’s Fellowship team. He was a member of Rotary International for more than 30 years, where he received the distinguished Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Fred also belonged to the Marion Lodge 562 of the Free and Accepted Masons as well other numerous county, state, and national pharmacy associations.
In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Regina F. (Ulery), brothers Gerald G. “Gib” Hayes, John Roy Hayes, infant Harry Galen Hayes and sister Jean Hayes Butler.
Fred is survived by his four children: Sherry Hayes Laughrey and her husband Patrick of High Point, NC, Laurene Hayes Campbell and her husband Richard of Wake Forest, NC, David Hayes and his wife Heather of Richmond, VA and Donald Hayes and his wife Christine of Milford, PA. Six Grandchildren Kalene Campbell, Jacob Campbell, Carrington Hayes, David William Hayes Jr., Nathaniel Hayes and Colin Hayes. In addition, he is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many life-long friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday June 29th at Ligonier First Church of the Brethren. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10:30 am. The service itself will begin at 11:00 a.m.
