Panagiotis Athanasiou

Panagiotis Athanasiou was born in Chalkida on the Island of Evia on March 25th, 1946- Greek Independence Day. He grew up on an island known for its unique tidal patterns and the seas always played an important role in his life. At 16 he joined the Merchant Marines to provide for his family, before enlisting in the Greek Navy. When his service was complete, he returned to the Merchant Marines and travelled all over the world, including to India, Egypt, and the United States.

After settling with family in Toronto, Canada he moved to the United States where he quickly developed a large social circle of fellow Greeks in Astoria, New York. He married his wife Chareclea in 1972 and had three wonderful children in their 52 years together. He loved nothing more than spending time with friends and family, particularly by the beach, on a fishing boat, or in the little “Greek” village of Mattituck, NY.

In late 2019 he was diagnosed with lung cancer but faced the diagnosis with strength and hope. He loved his complimentary latte or cappuccino provided by Memorial Sloane Kettering before and after every chemotherapy and radiation session. He took on each new medical challenge and unexpected setback after unexpected setback with strength and dignity. He never gave up and fought through every procedure and intervention recommended. On what would be his final night Panagiotis said, “ Αισθάνομαι πως έχω όλοv τον κόσμο μαζί μου,” “I feel like I have the whole world with me.” He knew every moment he was loved and supported.

He is survived by his wife and their three children and spouses, five grandchildren, and his brother. He will always be remembered for his desire to continue forward no matter how difficult the road ahead appeared. A private funeral mass will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Hicksville on January 20th,2024 at 9 am.
