Herbert A. Goerke Jr., age 91, of Hicksville, New York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Norma Goerke, with whom he shared 67 years of cherished marriage, holding her hand until his last breath.
Born and raised in New York, Herb was a beacon of love and warmth to all who knew him. His devotion to his family was evident in every aspect of his life. He was the proud father of three sons, Andrew, Robert, and Brian & embraced their wives, Susan, Rebecca, and Dale as his own daughters with boundless love and affection. Herb and Norma also loved and always held in their hearts their three baby children in Heaven, Lisa Ann, James, and an unnamed infant son.
Herb’s greatest joy came from his role as a grandfather to Jenna, Jared, Rachel, Jamie, and Michael. He never missed an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and milestones, cherishing every moment spent with them.
Herb held close the relationship he had with his sister-in-law, Mary and her husband, Richard, and joins in death his parents, Herbert Sr. and Grace, his brother, George, his parents in-laws, Herofilo and Zoila, and his sister-in-law, Edmee.
Throughout his life, Herb cultivated deep and lasting relationships with his and Norma’s dear life-long friends.
Herb lived life to the fullest. After a two-year stint in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and a 40 year career at the New York Stock Exchange, Herb and Norma traveled the world, enjoying over 30 years of retired life together. They reveled in each other's company and shared a passion for their catholic faith, travel, dining (Herb loved to eat!), and just kicking back and watching television. Dad also loved to sing and was a member of one choir or another for most of his life. Their enduring love story has been passed on to their descendants and will continue to pass on for generations to come.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00, followed by a Prayer Service at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home in Hicksville, New York. A funeral mass will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 26, 2024 at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Hicksville, New York, followed by an internment at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering to support cancer research, a cause dear to Herb’s heart, as he was a 20-year cancer survivor!
