Nancy Burton Shull passed away peacefully Thursday, June 1, at Catawba Regional Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 3, 1936, and was a life-long resident of Catawba County. Mrs. Shull was in the first graduating class of Fred T. Foard High School and was a proud graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University. Mrs. Shull was strongly committed to education and community interests. She taught English for twenty years at Fred T. Foard High School and enjoyed teaching an adult Sunday school class at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Additionally, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and served in the Hickory Woman’s Club. Mrs. Shull always wanted to help anyone who needed help of any kind. An excellent cook, she was always willing to bake a pie or cake and share with friends and neighbors. She never wanted to bring attention to herself and always put others before self. Mrs. Shull was preceded in death by her parents, William E. Burton, Sr. and Carrie Hudson Burton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dargon Shull, who passed away October 26, 2016. She is survived by daughters Libby Shull of Greensboro and Jennifer Shull Kistler of Hickory; grandsons Tyler Harold Shull of Asheville and David Keith Kistler of Raleigh; brothers William E. Burton, Jr. and wife Judith of Conover and Dudley Joe Burton, PhD and wife Janet of Sacramento, California. Also surviving are nephews William E. Burton, III and wife Laura of Browns Summit, Jason Patrick Burton and wife Jackie of Advance, Daniel Landau Burton and wife Erin of Austin, Texas, and Jeremy Landau Burton and wife Jill of Seattle, Washington. Nancy is a variation of the name Anna from the Hebrew Hanah meaning ‘graceful’ or ‘mercy.’ Mrs. Shull certainly exemplified those qualities throughout her life. She was kind, compassionate, strong, supportive and generous. As a Christian wife and mother, she was committed to her church, family, and profession. The Shull family will receive friends Saturday, June 3, from 5 – 7 pm at Hickory Funeral Home. Services will be held at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Vale on Sunday afternoon, June 4, at 5 pm, with Rev. Tony Sayer and Rev. Ron Doub officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tyler Shull, David Kistler, Chuck Kistler, William Burton, Jason Burton, and David Shull. Honorary pallbearer will be Jim Leatherman, a longtime friend and neighbor. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church at 8840 Cooksville Road in Vale, NC 28168 or Catawba Regional Hospice at 3795 Robinson Road in Newton, NC 28658.
