Jackson Winfield Hutchinson, 96 of Conover, passed away, Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Brian Center in Viewmont, following a period of declining health.
Jack was born on December 13, 1924, to the late Floyd and Mattie Belle Hutchinson in Bridgewater, NC where his dad was employed at the Duke Power plant. In 1928, at the age of 3 the family moved to Duke’s new power plant at Oxford Dam on the Catawba River. Jack’s fondest memories were of growing up there and he reminisced about them often.
After graduation from Oxford High School, Jack joined the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S. Biloxi for four years. He was so grateful for the opportunity, several years ago to visit the WW2 memorial in Washington DC and grateful for those who made this possible.
Jack retired from Superior Cable after 22 years of service, after which he and Shirley enjoyed many evenings on their carport swing visiting with friends and neighbors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Levonda Clark, his second wife, Shirley Whitener, his daughter, Susan Yount, his sisters, Kathleen Eckard (Pinkney), Patsy Kaylor (Morris), and his brother, Harry (Dottie).
Surviving are his daughter, Vicki Anderson, grandson, Scott Mingus, great-granddaughter, Sara Mingus, and, his sister, Gayle Stafford (Mack) of Hickory. Also surviving are special nieces and their children, Christy Afaro and Alex, and daughters, Ivy and Isabella; Sharon White and Ronald, and son, Joseph, who loved and cared for Jack and Shirley, and many other in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A special word of thanks to the doctors, nurses, PT assistants at Catawba Hospital and Brian Center who cared for him.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Catawba Funeral Home on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Andrew Rawls officiating.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 1901 Brunswick Avenue, Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28207, or The American Kidney Foundation, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852.
