Hickory — Edith Mae Wells Brown, 87, of Hickory went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, September 12th, 2012 at the Robbins Center Hospice Care in Hudson, NC after a period of declining health. She was born on Friday, December 26, 1924 to the late Claude Simmons and Bertha Smith Wells in Martinsville, Virginia.
She graduated from Martinsville High School and spent the early part of her marriage raising her family. Later, she served the children of Hickory City Schools as a lunchroom manager at Longview Elementary School. Throughout her life, in addition to being a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, she was a faithful and active member of the Westview United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served in the United Methodist Women for many years. In her later years, she was loved by the church family of Clover Baptist Church, where she attended with her daughter’s family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-two years, Clyde Homer Brown, whose Homegoing was August 24, 1997, her son, Kenneth Lynn Brown, and her brother Claude F. Wells.
She will be loved and missed by a son, Quinn Allan Brown, of Hickory; a daughter, Gloria Brown Carson and husband Buddy, of Hickory; a Daughter-in-Love, Paula Rhoney Stine, and husband Rudy of Hickory; a sister, Gladys Wells Setliff of Martinsville, Virginia; a grandson, Justin Brown Carson and wife, Jessica of Hickory; a step-grandson, Buddy Nolan Carson, and wife, Jennifer of Hickory; four granddaughters, Heidi Brown Hyde, and husband, Gerald of Hickory; Tonja Carson Morrison, and husband, David of Hickory; Monica Lynn Brown, who serves with the USAF in Japan; and Haley Mae Hamilton of Hickory. In addition, her family legacy lives on in her eleven beautiful great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 11:00 AM at Westview United Methodist Church in Hickory with Reverend Debra Short and Reverend Keith Childers officiating. A graveside service will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
