Carl Edwin Moser Sr.

Carl was born October 26, 1920 in Catawba County to the late Claude Rankin and Bland Roseman Moser. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Helen Virginia Bumgarner Moser, two sisters, Mary Beddingfield and Mildred Iaderosa and a brother, Bill Moser.

Carl was a World War II veteran, serving with the Seabees in the South Pacific. Later he started Carl Moser Masonry and was a charter member of the Western North Carolina Masonry Contractors Association. An active member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, he served as Chairman of the Board of Elders, Chairman of the Trustees, Scoutmaster, president of the Congregation, and most recently chairman of the Cemetery Committee. He served as a volunteer for many years at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Carl’s avocation was his photography depicting mostly rural and mountain landscapes, wildflowers, and portraits. A member of Catawba Valley Camera Club since 1955, he often led photographers on field trips. He traveled widely throughout the United States and Europe to pursue his hobby. In 1985 Carl was one of 45 American photographers invited by the Chinese government to tour China. Carl’s photographs have earned top ratings in local and national competitions, and he has exhibited at the Hickory Museum of Art and other local galleries. His photographs have been published in books, textbooks, magazines, and calendars and adorn the walls of private homes, public buildings, hospitals, and churches. Carl often presented slide shows to schools, civic organizations, and church groups. He was the first Photographic Society of America member in North Carolina to surpass the society’s five star rating in pictorial slides and earn a “galaxy of stars” rating.

Surviving are his daughters; Dana Carol Moser of Knoxville, TN and Kay M. Spatz and husband Ben of Hickory; his son, Carl Edwin “CE” Moser, Jr. and wife, Donna G. of Hickory; granddaughters, Helen Woy and husband, Rusty, of Hickory and Kyli Wooten of Knoxville, TN; grandsons, Kevin Moser and wife, Lisa, Carl E. “Trey” Moser, III and wife, Anne, Bert Spatz and wife, Laura, Jonathan Spatz and wife, Nicole, all of Hickory and Damon Wooten and wife, Kate, of Maryville, TN; great- grandchildren, Anna Rose Spatz, Gabby Spatz, Lauren Moser, Ella Woy, Jackson Moser, Luke Moser, Dylan Moser and Charlie Woy; sisters, Doris O’Brien Smith of Jackson, TN and Joyce Brown of Greensboro and a brother, Randy Moser and wife, Barbara, of Clarkesville, GA.

Services will be Sunday, May 27, 2012, at 3:00 P. M. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod with the Reverend David Ziehr and Reverend Brandon Martin officiating. The body will be placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service.

Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #48.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 P. M. at Hickory Funeral Home.
