At about the age of eight years old, his family moved to Azusa, California. David graduated from Azusa High School, and continued his education, graduating from Citrus College with an Associates Degree. In the early 60's, Dave was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served honorably, working and training in diesel maintenance. He served one year in Korea and some time near the DMZ.
Dave was married to Ida Hendricks for 33 years until her passing. They were a blended family of five children, along with 11 grand children, and 13 great grandchildren. In 2002, Dave married Kathy and they blended their lives and families. Through their union, the family expanded and David gained two more sons, and three more grandchildren.
As a teen, he worked at a chicken egg ranch collecting eggs and spent many years working at Valleydale Market to pay for his car and boat. After returning from the Army he worked in Quality Control at Pepsi Cola in Southern California. David retired early and moved to Boulder City, Nevada.
David was a man of principal, dedication and faith. For decades, he was very active with the Lutheran church. Dave was the "strong, silent" type; loyal, patient, and kind. He was devoted husband, father, grand father, and great father; whom centered his life around his family; and especially enjoyed being a "grandpa".
David loved cars and boats and especially his 1955 Pontiac convertible. He and friends would haul his ski boat to Salton Sea in California and spend the weekend water skiing. Over the years Dave enjoyed coaching baseball, watching football, and playing golf. In addition, he rarely passed up a the opportunity to enjoy a hamburger, fries, and a Coke at In-N-Out.
In retirement he and Ida spent their summers working at Jenny Lake Lodge in the Grand Tetons, Wyoming. That was a very happy time. He enjoyed exploring the west in their motor home. He was a life long fan of John Wayne and of every western movie ever made. In later years, he devoted his time helping guide a grandson though his grammar school years. Watching golf tournaments, and the Little League World Series gave him great pleasure.
In 2002, David married Kathy who brought into their lives her sons, Don and Ken along with granddaughter, Dana, grandsons Devan and David. Kathy widened his cinematic interests to classic movies that they both enjoyed researching. He expanded her enjoyment of western movies. They enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and RV trips with Dana to Monterey California where he took a nostalgic drive through Fort Ord. Dana and Devan joined them both on a well remembered RV vacation to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming's Yellowstone Park and the Tetons. There were many travel adventures to the north west. Trips to the Grand Canyon and Santa Fe were a great joy. Over the years, David was very supportive of home improvements that he was asked to do and did well. In December of 2019, he and Kathy attended an excellent John Wayne historic exhibit that was hosted by Ethan Wayne. It was the highlight of the year for them. He was as devoted to his new family as he was to his existing one. Over the years there were many joys and challenges for David. He dealt with them with patience and dignity. He will truly be missed by all.
