Latoya Jenise Calvin

La Toya J. Calvin was born on February 18, 1983 in Akron, OH to Jesse and Olympia Seward. She attended Akron Public School and graduated in 2001. La Toya joined the United States Navy and serves as a Yeoman Chief Petty Officer, and Flag Writer to the Admiral. She received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in March 2020 and holds certifications with the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Labor for Sensitive Security Information, Computer Operations, and Office Management/Administration Services.

Chief Calvin performed her duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner during the Global Pandemic Crisis. As acting Command Master Chief, she provided seamless continuity of leadership and direction for the region. Additionally, she developed and streamlined the process for more than 800 permanent change of station waivers for personnel throughout the region, resulting in timely submission to Navy Personnel Command with minimal to no delays. Chief Calvin’s initiative, perseverance, and loyal devotion to duty reflected credit upon herself and were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Service. Chief Calvin was also assigned to the Naval Medical Forces Pacific, where she contributed significantly towards the medical mission throughout the Pacific region and the United States Navy.

Latoya Calvin, loved life! There was not a moment that she did not show her love through her creativity and giving. Her passion of cooking for family and entertaining friends was one of her favorite joys; along with reading and decorating.

Latoya leaves behind to cherish her memories, her parents: Jesse and Olympia Seward, of Barberton, OH, brother: Jesse Seward VI, Virginia Beach, her beloved and devoted husband, William R. Calvin; daughters Emarie’ and Sarah Calvin; father and mother-in-law, William C. Calvin (Phyllis). She will also be remembered by a host of relatives, family, friends, shipmates and her companion dog, Diezel.

Chief Calvin’s decorations include the Joint Service Achievement Medal Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (2 awards), She was the recipient of the 2014 Navy League Sea Service Award Honolulu, the 2014 NAACP Dr. Mary McCloud Bethune Inspirational Leadership Award, 2012-14 United States America Presidential Volunteer Service Medals and was nominated as Commander Pacific Fleet’s Shore Sailor of the Year FY14.

A Private Internment will be held at Riverside National Cemetery.
