April 27, 1917 - February 19, 2017
Born on April 27, 1917, exactly three weeks after the U.S. entered WW I, Bernard "Bud" Michael Singer was a citizen of the world. Raised by his parents, Mathilda "Tillie" and William Singer, in New York City, with his older sister, Jeanette, Bud was a man who loved and honored his family, his friends, and his God. At age 18, he entered the U.S. Navy and spent over 30 years loyally serving his country. During WW II, Bud served as an aerial photographer and was honored as a member who assisted in the liberation of the Philippines. Bud retired from the Navy in Dec. 1966 with the rank of Lieutenant.
With his first wife, Helen, Bud had two children, Michael and Patricia. Sadly both of his children preceded him in death, his son in 1959 at the tender age of 18, and his daughter in 2013 at the age of 69. Although not raised in a religious home, Bud searched for God most everywhere he went. In August of 1956 at the age of 39, Bernard was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church on the continent of Antarctica. From that moment on, Bud committed himself to his Christian life and was eager to share not only his faith but his many talents as he helped build the Kingdom of God here on Earth. It was in 1971, while preparing to become a Lay Mission Helper for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles that Bernard met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Uram, and soon swept her off her feet. At the end of their year of preparation for work as lay mission helpers, Bud went off to serve in Papua New Guinea, and Barbara went to Ghana, West Africa as secretary to the bishop. Bud and Barb's love was both strong and faithful. Upon their return, some three years later, they continued their romance and were married in November of 1977. For the past 40 years they have been constant companions and confidants. Their commitment to one another was unwavering to the very end. Their life together gave true witness to the incredible love that God has for all of us.
Bud is survived by his dear wife, Barbara Jean; his grandchildren: Jennifer Nyhus and Todd Gerard with their father Jim Gerard; three great-grandchildren, Sierra, Kyla and Lucas; his nephew Bruce Verdrager and family; his niece Rita Adkins and family; as well as numerous cousins.
