In 1963 Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served and attained the rank of Sergeant Major before retiring to Haughton, Louisiana in 1991.
Larry was a member of American Legion Post 388 as well as the 40&8 Voiture Locale 1588. His hobbies included reading, watching the Military History channel (especially shows about WWII), and watching the LSU football games while on the phone with his brother-in-law and best friend Milt. He also loved to watch Jeopardy every day. Those who knew him best knew better than to call while it was on.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters Clara Akins, Leona Couch, Evelyn Jones, and June Lowe, as well as four brothers Charles, Avery, John, and Alvin.
Larry was married to Helga Papenfuss Williams on July 14, 1989 in El Paso, Texas and enjoyed 33 years of marriage. She survives. He is also survived by his son Tim (Becky) Aytes of Gresham, OR and daughter Laura (Dane) Grammer of Murphysboro, IL, grandchildren Tyler (Maria) Aytes, Jeremy Aytes, and Lane Grammer, brother Wendell “Cotton” Aytes of Rockwood, TN, sister Christine “Tina” Bonham of Crossville, TN, brother-in-law Milton Harrison of Haughton, LA, multiple nieces and nephews, and close personal friends, who he loved like children, Dr. Wally and Jennifer Nawas of Bossier City, LA, and their children, who he loved like grandchildren, Caroline (Joel) Jurisich, Jake (Ashton) Nawas, and Zach Nawas.
Visitation will be at 10am, Tuesday October 4th at Hill Crest Funeral Home in Haughton, LA, with funeral following at 11am.
