John Samuel Gholson, 80, passed away Monday, July 25, 2022. He was born June 19, 1942, in Vivian, LA and lived most of his early life there and in Shreveport. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1964, worked on graduate work in summers at University of GA and University of Florida. Mr. Gholson received his Master’s Degree in School Administration and Supervision from LSUS and also minored in history, language arts, and literature. Mr. Gholson, along with J.H. Duncan and several others, were instrumental in establishing First Baptist Church School in Shreveport, where Mr. Gholson taught in high school and 40 plus years in American History, English, and Literature in middle school. Mr. Gholson taught at Broadmoor Jr. High from 1964-1970 and was a loyal member of NMSA (National Middle School Association) where he attended dozens of conventions. Mr. Gholson loved music and had a request show for teens on radio during his high school and college years, and was a world traveler and tour guide. Mr. Gholson joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) in 1998 and was blessed and was also a blessing to those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lola B. Gholson; and his father, Thomas Watson Gholson; and his sisters, Margie O. Swanson, and Reba J. Roberts.
Mr. Gholson leaves one brother, Robert, and dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his “very” special friends, Harold Harris, Judy Jackson, Bud Jackson, David Rogers, Donnie Branscom, Esther Speck, and dozens of others.
John would like to be remembered by a poem he wrote about his very “best friend” in life – upon his death in 1998.
You made us smile for quite a while,
You brought joy to our spirits and lives
We miss the good times spent with you,
They were loving, caring, and wise.
The “Good Lord” has called you into His home,
Where fears will be no more
Where love abounds and fills each heart,
For those He loved and adored.
Your spirit shall always be here,
Your light will forever shine
Thanks for being our good friend,
The kind that is so hard to find.
We love and miss you very much,
And our tears do fall each day
But in our hearts we truly know,
God has taken you with Him…to stay
Memorial services for John will be held at 4:30 P.M., Monday, August 1, 2022, at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home.
