Dorothea Jo Strong, 95, also known as “Bobbie”, passed away peacefully in her home on July 12, 2024. Dorothea was born on February 16, 1929 in Longview, Texas. During her teenage years, Dorothea worked at Woolworth’s in Longview where she served ice cream behind the diner bar. When she was 17, Dorothea began working at Bell South, which would later become AT&T, as a service manager dispatching crews out to repair customer telephone lines and prepare new areas of development in the Shreveport/Bossier City area. After 40 years of dedicated work, she retired from AT&T on December 20, 1985.
Throughout her life, Dorothea enjoyed bowling in weekly bowling leagues with her husband, Lawrence. She loved fishing and camping at Toledo Bend and Lake O’ The Pines in Texas, sunbathing on the beach in Florida, and shopping at her favorite store, Dillard’s. In her retirement years, her favorite past-time was solving the Crossword, Sudoku and Jumble puzzles in the daily newspaper. Most importantly, she enjoyed being with her family, loving on her dogs and cat, and spending time with all of her grandchildren, who knew her as “Bobbie” (well to Liam, “Barbie”).
Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence T. Strong, her mother and stepfather Ruby E. Strong and Travis J. Strong, her brother James E. Terry, her brother Herbert M. (Michael) Strong, and daughter Linda S. Bates. She is survived by her grandson Dr. Michael L. (Larry) Bates and wife Jennifer, granddaughter Teri L. Bates; son-in-law Roger L. Bates; great-grandchildren Taylor M. Norris and husband Jonathan, Mason M. Anderson and husband Luke, and her great-great-grandchildren Benson, Myleigh, August Jo, and Liam, who loved their “Bobbie” so very much.
The family would like to thank Passages Hospice Care, and a special thanks to Melissa, Shy, Ronda, Heather, Ramona, and Cynthia for helping us fulfill our Bobbie’s wishes of spending her final moments surrounded by family in the comfort of her home. We are forever grateful, thank you.
