Larry was a jokester and a master storyteller. He enjoyed making people smile and laugh, and after one of his stories, you were guaranteed to leave with both. He was a caring person who would do anything he could for anyone, and this was one of the many reasons he was so loved. But, as much as he enjoyed doing for others, the most important thing in his life was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Larry began his career in the military at age 17, where he was sent to Berlin, Germany to help work on the Berlin Wall. Once home, he worked his way up to drill sergeant where he trained privates at Fort Knox. Larry spent two tours in Germany during his time in the military. After he left active Army duty, he spent the rest of his time in the Kentucky National Guard before his retirement.
Larry was preceded in death by his two sons, Andrew and Brian Welch. Parents, Lawrence and Viola Welch. Brothers, Dan Welch and Randall Welch. Sister, Alma Collette.
He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Wanda Welch. Daughter, Amy Welch Walker and son, William Welch. Grandchildren: Megan (Gary) Overton, Emily Welch, Eli Welch, Chelsea Biefeldt, Chase (Katelyn) Biefeldt, and Catey Biefeldt. Great Grandchildren: Gabriel Robertson and Erza Jade Overton. Brothers, Stanley Welch and Bruce Welch. Sister, Wilma Sumpter. As well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 from 12 until 2 PM at Coffey Funeral Home in Harrogate. The funeral service will be at 2 PM in the Coffey Funeral Home chapel. A graveside service will follow in the Welch Cemetery in Speedwell with military honors.
